Congo Ebola Outbreak Spreads to Seventh Province
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached Sud-Ubangi, becoming the seventh province affected and extending the outbreak into western Congo. More than 7,000 cases and 3,300 deaths had been reported by September 11 as authorities expand vaccination and testing efforts.
The geographic expansion raises the danger of cross-border transmission because Sud-Ubangi borders the Central African Republic and Congo-Brazzaville. Population movement, displacement and pressure on Congo’s health system are making containment more difficult.
Health authorities will intensify contact tracing, surveillance and vaccination while monitoring neighboring countries for imported infections. Trials of a vaccine targeting the Bundibugyo Ebola strain are also underway.
