Ethiopia’s Tigray Conflict Erupts Again With Airstrikes and Artillery
Fighting has sharply escalated in northern Ethiopia, with airstrikes and artillery reported in Tigray after federal forces retook the regional capital Mekelle. Humanitarian sources told Reuters that at least 17 people were killed northwest of Mekelle, with additional casualties reported elsewhere in the region.
The escalation is the most serious since the devastating 2020–2022 Tigray war, which killed hundreds of thousands. Rising tensions between Ethiopia and neighbouring Eritrea add the risk that renewed fighting could develop into a broader Horn of Africa conflict.
International attention will focus on whether federal and Tigrayan forces expand operations and whether neighbouring Eritrea becomes more directly involved. Washington has urged restraint as regional diplomatic efforts intensify.
